Gail Hastings makes sculptuations (sculptural situations).
Material space constitutes a sculptuation. It is a type of space artists, such as Donald Judd, developed in the early 1960s.
It is a built space, a space put together with hammer and nails. It is not the found space of a room that automatically surrounds us. It is space to look at, not through. It is a space that gets us, no matter how little we get it.
A part of art, now, for over fifty years, only a few words have been tasked to describe it—leaving much, still, to understand.
Notwithstanding, as the focus of Gail’s practice for over twenty-five years, the uncharted hold of this space remains unrelenting and propelling.
